Well today, at the early of morning around 12 A.M, I watched Shutter Island. I've been dying to watch this movie since it was popular in cinema but I had no time to watch it. Then the DVD come out and I contemplated with myself whether it will be worth it or vice versa. Then it comes out in HBO. *Thank God I have ASTRO and HBO! Hands down, I love this movie. You ask me why? Well... *Check out the review below!
*BEWARE there is spoiler in here. Do not read them if you want to watch this movie.*
Plot: This movie is basically about a man - Edward Daniels by Leornado DiCaprio, who is a U.S Marshal. He's assigned to go to a mental institution on Shutter Island, *That's where the title name comes from, to investigate a disappearance of one of the patient there. However, his main reason why he went there is to find a pyromaniac who caused his wife's death. Throughout the story, Edward realizes there is some conspiracy in that mental institution.
Characters: Edward Daniels had a wife named, Dolores Chanal who died in a fire caused by the arsonist named Andrew Laddies. So when Edward, *a.k.a Teddy, goes to this mental institution, he starts to lose his mind because of the nightmares he had about his wife. I think Leornado DiCaprio played this role so well - the anguish losing his wife, the dreadful war he had been through and the remorse - he managed to pull it so well. *Anyhow, the credits also goes to the other patients who played crazy and (scary!) xD
Moral Values: When I watched this movie, I actually can guess what the ending would be. When the truth wrapped up, I began to put the pieces together and came out with this; We have to be alert to the others problems. Edward is actually Andrew Laddies, a U.S Marshal who married to Dolores Chanal and had three children; all murdered by his own wife. When he found out, he killed his wife but cannot accept the fact, *Andrew blamed himself for his children's death because he failed to realize there's something wrong with his wife, and began to create a fantasy; a fantasy that he's a good man in it. So I believe, we have to be aware of others troubles. Never being ignorant.
Rating: I'd give 4 out of 5. It fulls of suspense and makes you want to watch it till the end but in the end, your predicament is true all right. *That's what the best part about it :)
P/S: I like this movie ending. It's rarely to find a movie with an ending that makes you think. But in Shutter Island, there is one sentence Andrew told to his doctor that actually made me think. Here it is.
"Would you rather die as a good man or live as a monster?"
