Hello people. I hope all of you have a good day today. As for me I'll be posting two reviews; one is 'The Butterfly Effect' and another one is the movie I had watched today which is 'Prometheus'. But for now I'll be entertaining you with the review about 'The Butterfly Effect' by Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber. Enjoy the ride :)
"You can't change who people are without destroying who they were."
Jason Treborn, The Butterfly Effect
Storyline: Ashton Kutcher as Evan Treborn was a seven-years old boy when he had a few blackouts during certain events in his life. These blackouts had occurred to him so bad that he kept journals to prevent him from forgetting again, which would happen during the blackouts. As he grew up, the blackouts lessened until one day at the college, he decided to read his journal again and realized that he had a power to go back to the past when he read them. After an event happened in his present life, he decided to go back to the past to change the future. However, that is when things turned to get worst.
What's in: 1) The Butterfly Effect. 'The Butterfly Effect' had attracted me a few years ago when I was in high school where I encountered a short story in newspaper titled, 'Can I Help You?' I read the short story without expecting anything and I was mind-blown by it. The short story emphasized the Butterfly Effect and the writer was so good in interpreting the moral value. For those who don't know about the Butterfly Effect, it means a single, tiny thing can change a whole event which leads to the future. To put in easier way, imagine yourself having a chat with someone. Then in one point you have done or asked something rude. You might not notice your mistake but that person was very angry to you until to the point he/she wants revenge. This, could lead to your future - means you can be dead killed by that person or you're suffered by his/her revenge plan. And where is the Butterfly Effect in here? It is in the part where you said/done something wrong to that person. You might think it's a small matter but it can chain to serial events, creating the future. If you're a person who enjoys a movie which meant to surprise you, this is one of the movies. 2) Time-travelling movie. Evan had three childhood friends; one girl and two boys. See the cliche here? A girl. They had a rough past together but there are only two persons in his life he wants to protect - his Mom and the girl, Kayleigh. He likes her; loves her even. But when she died, he decided to save her - by time-travelling. In the movie, you'll be amazed on how organized the story is. The scenes were following each other means on simple action can lead to another events without confusing you. Unlike other time-travelling movies such as 'Back to the Future' and 'Time Traveller's Wife', 'The Butterfly Effect' promotes a whole new idea of time-travelling. In 'Back to the Future', Steven Spielberg created a machine which is the car. It's not a human's superpower. Meanwhile in 'Time Traveller's wife', the hero went back to the past and forth to the present without his consent but not to change the future. In this movie, Evan had the ability to time-travelling but he wanted to change the future. He wanted a better future. To do that, he needed to pay a great deal of sacrifice. 3) Romantic/drama themed movie. Evan went back to past to save Kayleigh. Do I need to say more? 4) Sacrifice. If you're having this power, what would you do? Evan had his own purpose when he went back to the past. He had been in many future, the consequences of his ability. However, to save a person means you need to sacrifice something else. What is it, you asked? Go watch it yourself :) 5) Great acting casts. Ashton Kutcher played Evan so well that it was believable. He portrayed a man who will do everything to save not only his true love but also his family and his friends. He was being selfish but he had reasons. Amy Smart as Kayleigh also succeeded. She was needed to play several characters and she played them well. Besides that, young Logan Lerman (WAAHH) who acted as seven-years old Evan gave a superb acting for his age. He's literally cursing with such tantrum! Trust me, this is priceless.
What's out: 1) The Unexpected ending. When I mentioned romantic/drama themed movie, you might expect a good, happy ending but in this case, it didn't. However, when you watch this movie, you will pay attention to how it was made, how the values was delivered but you couldn't help but to wonder why the movie ends like that. I'm at least, wanting another closure. But if you're watching this movie and do not like the ending, you can choose from the other 3 alternative endings :p 2) Non family-themed movie. Do not watch this movie, uncut with your family behind you. Don't. This movie was a bit inappropriate for children. Also, if you watch it with your family, they might ask you question. I don't know about you but I dislike it, very much.
Moral value: As I mentioned before, I'll state one value I really like and I chose, think before you speak or act. Evan made mistakes in his past. He tried to redeem himself, control things which he couldn't before but it caused him and others too much pain. In my point of view, he was being selfish. He changed the future along with the people who lived in it. He kept doing the same thing he could do, at the moment which he thought could save himself and his beloved ones but he didn't think a long term period. He had destroyed his perfect future because he didn't think about his actions. So peeps, please think before you speak or act. I know it's hard (sometimes the words/action come faster than brain process) but when you're watching this movie and being Evan for a second, you know how much difference it could make.
Ratings: 9 out of 10. Yes, I gave this 9 out of 1o. This movie moved me. It made me thinking, it made me realizing that a small thing which you think is irrelevant or unimportant, it can have a big impact to your life. This movie also was well written, well directed and well acted. If you're a movie-geek, this is one of the movies you shouldn't miss.
